how to not super-size your wedding

holly & doug

When I first got engaged, it was a really joyous time, friends and family members were incredibly happy for us and bombarded us with questions like “When’s the date?”, “What are you thinking of doing for x-y-z?” and on and on. The wedding magazines flung themselves out from well-meaning hands, and now having an excuse to buy them, I accumulated a pile.

The wedding industry in Canada a $4 billion dollar moneymaker. Like anyone else in business, they want your money. They want you to upsize from the included table linens to the really cool damask pattern ones for another $5. There’s no reason why you have to. The average cost of a wedding these days in Canada is NOT $50,000 like the WIC would like to tell you, it’s a $17,300. This is still a chunk of change that could be put to many uses, and in your own life, I’m sure you can think of a few.

Here’s a couple wedding myths I would like to dispel completely:
(1) There is absolutely nothing you should feel obligated to do. This is the wedding of YOU and your fiance. Make it yours.
(2) You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a fabulous wedding. It has been done for $2,000 or less.
(3) You aren’t the only one who thinks the typical stereotypes still apply. Check out Offbeat Bride.

Fun With Beads: Tiara

By hols On March 10th, 2009 in Crafty Goddess /

This tiara project is perfect for anyone with a upcoming graduation, wedding, or costume ball…. It does require some time and creativity, but the end result can be really rewarding.

For the first few months of our engagement I had a really hard time narrowing down venues, so I decided that I COULD work on my tiara in the meantime, so this was a project to keep me from going bonkers :D

I started with a plain silver headline with pearls and some bling in it that I got at Ardene’s for $5.

While having a Slice marathon, I added 3-5″ lengths of wire with my mini pearl combination pack from Walmart ($2.97), some 6mm sparkly silver beads, and 4mm blue and green bicones.

This is the almost finished result, I think I will add a few more on the sides for effect.

Total Cost Breakdown:
Cutter/Bender/Plier Tool $3.49
Wire $2.00
Beads – Pearls $2.97
Headband Free (friend paid, but about $5)
Other beads $14

TOTAL COST $22.46
